Study in Spain and work a few hours per week
The student visa is the residence authorization that allows non-European citizens to stay in Spain while pursuing studies in public or private educational institutions, conducting research in the country, or participating in any type of training.
Anyone wishing to enroll in any vocational training course, master's program, postgraduate program, doctorate, or undergraduate program in Spain must apply for a study visa. However, the most important requirement for successfully obtaining a student visa in Spain is related to the specific course and studies you enroll in.
Until a few years ago, the only way for a foreign student to come and study in our country was to apply for a study visa before entering Spain. In other words, the visa application started at the Spanish Consulate in the student's country of residence. However, since 2018, it's possible to apply for the visa once you are already in Spain, without the need for any prior procedures at the Spanish Consulate.
Additionally, the spouse or registered partner and minor or disabled children of the student can also obtain a visa to accompany the student.
The maximum initial duration for a student visa is 2 years, although the norm is 1 year, which can be renewed for a second year.
The visa holder is allowed to work for 30 hours per week.
REQUIREMENTS FOR OBTAINING THE Study Stay Permit
Not being a citizen of a European Union state, the European Economic Area, or Switzerland.
Having no criminal records in Spain, your country of origin, and previous countries of residence for the past five years, for offenses recognized under Spanish law.
Not being prohibited from entering Spain and not being listed as inadmissible in the territory of countries with which Spain has a signed agreement to that effect.
Not being, if applicable, within the commitment period of not returning to Spain that the foreigner assumed when voluntarily returning to their country of origin.
Having sufficient financial means to cover the expenses of stay and return to your country and, if applicable, those of your family members. This means that for the visa holder, 100% of the IPREM (Public Income Indicator for Multiple Purposes) is required, which in this year 2025 amounts to over 600€ per month, 75% of this amount for the first family member, and 50% for the remaining persons.
Having public or private health insurance arranged with an authorized insurance entity to operate in Spain.
Having been admitted to an authorized educational institution in Spain to undertake a full-time program leading to the attainment of a degree or certificate of studies.
Not suffering from any of the diseases that can have serious public health repercussions in accordance with the provisions of the 2005 International Health Regulations.
VALID STUDIES AND COURSES
One of the most important requirements for successfully obtaining a student visa in Spain is related to the specific course and studies in which candidates enroll. It doesn't matter if you have private medical insurance and sufficient financial resources; if the academic institution or the course doesn't meet the appropriate requirements, your application will not be accepted. Therefore, as long as the studies are not online, you can complete your application by enrolling in:
· Bachelor's degrees
· Master's and doctoral programs
· Vocational training
· Higher artistic or sports education
· Language courses!
Studies in both public and private institutions are valid, as long as the course leads to obtaining a degree or qualification. However, courses that can allow you to obtain a study visa must meet the following conditions:
- The course must involve a minimum of 20 hours per week.
- The studies must be conducted in an institution authorized by the Ministry of Education (or by the regional government where you currently reside). This means it must be registered in the Official Public Register or in the registry of the autonomous community where you are applying for the visa.
- You must provide an official certification upon completing the course. In the case of language courses, the academy must be accredited (for a Spanish course, the center must be accredited by the Cervantes Institute; and if the program is for any other language, by the equivalent institution).
